How to use
What size self-watering insert do I need and how do I use it?
The self-watering insert is a simple watering system that gives the plants exactly the right amount of water when the plant needs it. The system's water meter tells you when to fill it, after which the plants can fend for themselves for weeks. Goodbye, plant stress! The self-watering insert fits in most elho indoor pots, as well as other pots made of ceramics, for example. On this page, you will find an image with an overview. Enjoying a green interior without worries, that's the dream!
This video shows the steps to follow when using the insert for the first time:
My railing is larger than 6 cm, which balcony planter should I buy?
Most of our balcony planters fit on a railing with a maximum width of 6 cm. But we also have troughs that can be paired with our adjustable brackets on our website. Alternatively, you can see an overview here.
The following balcony planters are suitable for railings up to 12 cm:
- noa balcony trough (M, L or XL) with the noa universal balcony hooks
- barcelona trough (40, 50, 70 or 90 cm) with the barcelona balcony hook
- green basics trough (40, 50, 60 or 80 cm) with the green basics metal balcony hook
There are holes in the legs of the green basics xxl and super xxl grow tables. Why is that?

We recommend filling all four legs of the grow table with clay beads. As soon as the legs are filled with clay beads, you can fill the entire grow table with potting soil and start planting! This will prevent the legs from becoming clogged with potting soil, and the floor from getting too dirty and will ensure excess water can easily drain through the clay beads.

Is my elho product UV and/or frost resistant?

Yes! All elho pots are UV-resistant, and our outdoor collection is also frost-resistant. They can withstand winter temperatures as low as -20°C and cope well with hot summer days.

If you’d like to get the very best out of your pot, you can take a few extra steps:

  • Make sure excess water can drain away. If your outdoor pot doesn’t have drainage holes yet, you can easily drill them yourself. This prevents water from freezing inside and causing damage.

  • We also recommend placing your pot in a stable spot – or moving it – during extreme weather conditions.

What is the maximum possible width of my balcony rail if I want to install the flower bridge?

All flower bridges sizes 30cm & 60cm from elho are suitable for balcony railings of up to 6cm max. The handy fixators that we supply allow you to securely attach the flower bridge onto the railing. It is that easy!

How can I make sure my pot stays stable?

Some pots with a raised bottom can be filled with sand to increase stability. You can recognise these pots by a small opening at the bottom and the black stopper that comes with them.

To fill the pot, simply turn it upside down and use a funnel to add shell sand. After filling, close the opening with the stopper. The stopper is designed to let excess water drain away, so there’s no need to drill extra holes – very convenient!

To secure the stopper properly, we recommend applying a little extra pressure or using a rubber mallet. If it still doesn’t fit easily, place the stopper in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes – this will make the material more flexible and easier to insert.

If you’ve lost your stopper, we’ll happily send you a replacement free of charge. Click here to request a new stopper.

How to use the happy herbs?

The happy herbs has been designed so you can place a plant container directly inside – either 13 cm or 15 cm in diameter. This means you don’t need to repot your herbs, which makes it super easy and convenient!

There is a water reservoir in the loft urban, but I don't see a hole in the pot?

All loft planters come with a built-in water reservoir. This clever system makes sure your plant never gets too much water. Excess rainwater is collected in the reservoir so the roots don’t sit in water. Whenever needed, the roots can draw from the reservoir — keeping your plant happy and healthy!

Any overflow is safely drained away through the outlet pipe. You don’t need to drill any holes yourself – we’ve already taken care of that in every loft product.

Material
I want to paint my pots, is this possible?

How cool that you want to paint your pots! Our pots are mainly produced from recycled polyethylene and this material is difficult to paint. We would therefore advise against it, because the result may turn out differently than you expected. But if we can't stop your creativity, our advice would be to slightly roughen the surface and use a plastic primer beforehand.

What material are elho pots made of?

All our pots are made from 100% recycled plastic. This makes them not only durable and long-lasting, but also a sustainable choice for your garden.

Maintenance
My premium pot has black spots – what should I do?

Why does my pot have tiny pores, and how do I keep it clean?

Due to the handcrafted process, pores are a characteristic feature of these pots. These pores are tiny holes in the surface and can attract dirt. To keep your pot looking beautiful:

  • Filling tips: Never fill the pot completely to the rim with soil. Cover the rim with plastic, foil, or cardboard while filling. This ensures a clean and neat finish.

  • Cleaning advice: Clean your pots 1–2 times a year using warm water with mild detergent and a tiny splash of bleach. Rinse thoroughly afterwards for sparkling clean pots. A high-pressure hose can also be effective.

  • Extra help: You can request a free cleaning kit via our service parts page.

Following these steps will keep your pots looking their best year after year.

How do I clean my elho flower pot or planter?

To keep your pots and planters looking their best, we recommend cleaning them regularly. Mix warm water with a splash of cleaning vinegar or a little natural soap, and use a soft brush or cloth to gently remove any residue. Avoid scouring pads, as they can damage the surface.

For stubborn spots, you can try a mild solution of water with baking soda, or use a plastic cleaner designed for this purpose.

Please note: Avoid harsh cleaning agents, as they can damage the material.
