There are several sizes to choose from: a compact 35‑litre rain catcher, a 110‑litre rain barrel and a large 200‑litre version for anyone looking to collect even more water. And there’s more on the horizon — we expect to add a 350‑litre option in the future.
Whichever rain barrel you go for, you’ll save water, support nature and add a stylish eye‑catcher to your garden.

Collect rainwater and reduce water use

A water butt is the smart way to use water more consciously. By collecting rainwater, you reduce the need for tap water when watering your plants – and at the same time help reduce water overload during heavy rainfall.

Elho has a strong focus on sustainability, using recycled plastic and reusing production materials wherever possible. Our rain barrels are produced with 100% wind energy from our own wind turbine, and we strive for long product lifecycles and full recyclability.

We even offer a return programme, allowing you to send back old elho products for recycling – supporting a circular future together.

How do I easily connect my rain barrel?

Because each model is different, every elho water butt is connected in its own way. On each product page, you’ll find a step‑by‑step manual explaining the exact installation. Prefer a visual guide? Watch the instruction video for the green basics rain barrel.

Elho also offers a diverter that connects your water butt to the downpipe. A diverter fills the butt automatically and redirects excess water back into the pipe once it’s full. This ensures efficient water collection – much faster than creating a hole in the barrel alone.

The elho diverter fits both the 110L and 200L green basics rain barrels.

Please note: the diverter is not included.

Accessories

Elho pays close attention to details and ease of use. All water butts include a handy tap for easily dispensing water. Some models also include a lid to prevent dirt from entering the butt.

Additional accessories are available, such as:

  • A rain diverter for connecting the butt to the downpipe

  • Stands to raise the rain barrel from the ground

In short, elho rain barrels and water butts combine functionality, sustainability and design – making them a beautiful and responsible addition to any garden.

Multifunctional design

Elho water butts don’t just collect and store rainwater – they’re also wonderfully multifunctional.

Some models in the green basics range feature a planter on top, offering space for flowers, herbs or even veggies. The barrel below collects rainwater, which you can then use to water those very plants. Stylish, practical and sustainable all at once!

By collecting rainwater, you reduce your use of drinking water, help prevent flooding during heavy rainfall and make a positive impact on the environment. With a rain barrel, you make greener living beautifully easy.

FAQ - about rain barrels

How do I maintain my water butts?

Rain barrels and water butts are low‑maintenance, but a few simple steps keep them working perfectly for years:

  1. Clean the inside at least once a year to remove algae or debris. Warm water and a soft brush are all you need.

  2. Check the tap and any filter or diverter regularly to make sure they’re clear of leaves or dirt.

  3. In winter, empty or disconnect your water butt during severe frost to prevent damage.

How much water can I save each year?

A rain barrel can save hundreds of litres of drinking water per year. On average, around 850 litres of rainwater fall per square metre annually in the Netherlands. Using a 200‑litre water butt, you’ll quickly save thousands of litres – especially if you fill it several times a year. Great for the environment and your wallet!

Is a rain barrel better placed in sun or shade?

Place your water butt in shade, ideally close to the downpipe. Cooler water reduces algae growth and keeps the collected rainwater fresher for longer. Direct sun also heats the plastic unnecessarily.

What should I do when frost is expected?

To prepare your rain barrel for freezing temperatures:

  • Empty the butt completely (or leave just a small layer).

  • Leave the tap open so it can’t freeze shut.

  • Disconnect accessories like filters or diverters and store them.

  • Turn the barrel upside down during extreme frost if needed.

Should the lid always stay on?

Yes, it’s always a good idea to keep the lid on your rain barrel. This helps prevent leaves, dirt and insects from getting into the water. The lid also reduces algae growth and stops mosquitoes from laying their eggs in the barrel. On top of that, a closed rain barrel is much safer for children and animals. And with some models, the lid even helps reduce evaporation, so you can enjoy your collected rainwater for longer.
A rainy day suddenly doesn’t seem so bad with our rain barrels! Collect the rainwater and reuse it to water your plants, as drinking water for your pets or even for cleaning your windows.
