Dark house?

Does your house have dark spots? Then it's often difficult to choose the right plant. Most plants not only need sufficient water and nutrition, they also need sufficient (sun)light. Still want to brighten up your home with plants? Make sure you choose the right one!

Some plants hardly grow without sunlight. The following plants absolutely need a light spot near the window: livisonia, schefflera and sparrmannia africana. These plants often also need quite a bit of water. But don't be sad: there are sufficient flowers that feel right at home in a dark corner. We're going to tell you what the greatest alternatives are!

Who should you turn to?

Maybe you expect a small list of plants that is dwarfed when compared to the tropical livisonia but nothing could be less true. Some plants are even made for dark spots and don't take a back seat to the tropical species that only grow with a lot of sunlight.

Calathea

The calathea, for example, looses its beautiful pattern when it sees sunlight However, it does require high humidity. In the winter, when the heater is on, it is wise to give the plant a refreshing rinse every now and then. In doing so, the soil in the pot needs to remain a little bit moist at all times.

Grass lily

The grass lily is a jewel! Not only does this plant do great in dark places. It also needs little care. Do you neglect your plants sometimes? Then the grass lily is the perfect plant for you. You only need to water it 2-3 times per week. Still forgot it for a week? Nothing is lost! After cutting the rotten leaves, they grow right back.

Rhapis

There is no indoor plant that does as well in the dark as the rhapis. The less light, the deeper and more beautiful its green colour will be. Do ensure the soil of the plant remains moist. The advantage of dark places is that the soil remains moist longer than when the plant is placed in the sun.

Sanseveria

This plant is a true chameleon. It grows great in a sunny spot as well as in the shadows. If you aren't blessed with a green thumb, this plant is your best friend. It drinks little water and can even go without moisture for weeks. So when you're on vacation, because YOU do want to catch some sun, it still blooms when you come back; perfect!

Caryota Mitis

Looking for a tropical species? You might expect that a tropical plant always needs a lot of sunlight. But the caryota mitis, also known as fishtail palm, works great in a dark spot. Do make sure the soil doesn't dry out. This plant always needs plenty to drink. However, it doesn't like standing in the water with its roots... Not the easiest client but if you take good care of it, it is a very beautiful one.
